Singer Artist Statemtent The intention of the work is to explore the boundaries of public and private spaces. It posits questions like: how do we define public or private spaces? where does private or public space begin or end? what is the relationship of the social body to the physical body? of our interior psychological body to our exterior physical body? and what is the relation of gender and space? The title, Back to Back, refers to the 50 draped backs and to the relationships implied by the physical gesture of being back to back. The mould-making process to make the forms can be compared to a snake forming, shedding and changing skins. This sequence of production is similar to the process of casting which involves layering and repetition. The figures are cast from moulds made directly from the naked, back torso of my husband and my full standing back. Each figures is unique, with its own configuration of classically influenced drapery. All the figures are headless and hollow. The male torsos on the wall appear to be solid and beyond our reach, while the female figures on the ground are freestanding and allow the viewer to enter the space of the body shells, to try them on for size. The placement of the figures and the imprint of an absent body evoke an event about to happen or one that has occurred, leaving an elusive impression of what has transpired. Back to Back
shifts continually between inside/outside and public/private.
